Reading comprehension

When we talk about the best preschool study materials, we definitely must mention reading. Reading comprehension is the ability to process a text, understand its meaning, and integrate it with what the reader already knows. It is one of the four foundational skills of language learning together with writing, speaking and listening.

At this early stage you should focus on developing the reading abilities. Always have in mind that the process of learning how to read can vary from child to child and each one will learn at his or her own pace. But before your kid learns how to understand and interpret words on a page, he or she should have already developed a certain level of understanding of spoken words. That is why it is crucial that your child watches cartoons, suitable movies and DVDs. Communication with people of different ages would also be very beneficial. This will enrich their oral vocabulary and facilitate the process of reading.

So, after they can understand hundreds or thousands of spoken words, and have a basic knowledge of alphabetic rules and order, they will start developing the ability to read words on paper. At Pre K stage, children can benefit greatly from being read to by their parents. By regularly reading to your child, you will notice that after some time he/she will be able to recognize words and signs from the stories that have already being read to them. So, it is important to re-read the stories several times (day after day) until your kid starts to point out certain words and phrases that are familiar to him/her. You may notice that sometimes your child may “pretend” to read, meaning that he or she has remembered some words and phrases by heart. That is perfectly OK and it is the first stage of developing reading abilities.
